A Weekend Escape from Seoul: Discovering Incheon's Hidden Gems

Hello everyone! Karmen here, I am from Hong Kong and am doing a summer internship in Korea. After a long, hectic work week, there's nothing quite like recharging with a weekend getaway. I decided to explore the often-overlooked city of Incheon, just a short train ride from bustling Seoul.

Incheon: Unveiling a Coastal Retreat Beyond the Airport

Incheon is often overshadowed by its famous Incheon International Airport, but it has so much more to offer. Beautiful beaches, serene countryside, and a unique blend of urban and rural attractions make it a hidden gem worth exploring. My friends had raved about the stunning sunsets and tranquil atmosphere, a stark contrast to the energetic pace of Seoul. With just a 1.5-hour train ride, it seemed like the perfect escape.

Getting to Incheon: Train, Bus, and a Cozy Airbnb

My journey began with a scenic train ride on the Airport Railroad line to Yeongjong Station. From there, I hopped on a local bus to reach my Airbnb, nestled in a quiet residential area. (Don't worry about getting lost; the bus stop at Yeongjong Station has clear signage with all the routes.)

When I arrived at my Airbnb, I was greeted by a surprise—a cute two-toned cat with big black eyes! The apartment itself was warm, inviting, and filled with adorable plushies, creating a cozy and friendly atmosphere.

Exploring Masian Beach: Farmlands, Seashores, and Solitude

Did you know that almost half of South Korea's population lives in Seoul? This means many areas outside of Seoul are less crowded, and Incheon is one of them. Walking through the rural farmlands for over 30 minutes to reach Masian Beach was a unique experience. It was both relaxing and a bit eerie, as I felt like I was the only person for miles. But it was a beautiful change of scenery from the crowded streets of Seoul.

Cafe by the Sea: Sunsets, Serenity, and Sweet Treats

After my farmland walk, I reached a cozy café near the seashore. The modern design and warm atmosphere were inviting. I decided to try Injeolmi cake (a traditional Korean rice cake dessert) and a baked british scone with a vanilla latte. Though the taste was nothing extraordinary, the ambiance and view were truly rewarding. As the wind picked up, swirling leaves and petals hinted at the approaching sunset.

Chasing the Incheon Sunset: A Magical Experience

With the sun startingathtaking colors of the sunset, the sound of crashing waves, and the playful seagulls created an unforgettable moment. to set, I hurried to the shore to admire the view I'd been eagerly anticipating.

A Serene Seaside Stroll and a Birthday Surprise

Walking along the seashore at Masian Beach, I had a heartwarming encounter. A cute grandma was standing along the beach, intently writing messages in the sand with a long stick. She wrote about three times, telling everyone that today was her 63rd birthday! It was such a funny and endearing sight. I chuckled as I passed by her, still focused on her "artwork."

The Evening Atmosphere: Seafood, Barbeque, and Family Gatherings

As darkness fell, I decided to head back, but the locals were just getting started. Many seafood and barbeque restaurants were still bustling with activity. I could hear the joy in the waves of laughter of the locals as I walked past, so I’m assuming that everyone was having a really good time, like me.

Navigating Incheon's Countryside: A Transportation Tip

The road back to the city was dimly lit, highlighting the challenges of rural transportation. If you're planning to explore Incheon's countryside, I recommend renting a car or taking a taxi, especially at night.

Annyeong! Karmen here. I'm a third-year Sociology student from Hong Kong, spending six weeks of my summer in Seoul as a marketing intern at Wonderful. This experience has definitely been a learning curve for me, but I'm embracing the challenge and enjoying the chance to explore a new field. When I'm not working, I love to travel and immerse myself in new cultures. During my time here, I've been exploring as much of Korea as possible, making unforgettable memories with friends along the way. My favorite spot so far? Hangang Park, where I can unwind and recharge while watching the sunset over the river. I'm excited to share my Korean adventures with you all! 😊
